Brief History
The Microbiology department of Surendranath College, Kolkata began in the year 1999 under the able leadership Prof. Pranab Kumar Mukhopadhyay, retired Professor of Zoology and Prof. Mousumi Podder Sarkar, the then faculty of the Botany department. The department offered 3 years honours course in Microbiology at the undergraduate level. At that time it consisted of a few part-time teachers, who were very dedicated. Inspite of the fact that the department had a very less number of teachers, very good and promising students were produced. Many of them are well-placed all over the world. It can be proudly announced that the Bioscience department of Presidency University and Burdwan University has permanent faculty members who are alumni of this department.
Now coming back to this department, in the year 2011, the department received 3 Government approved Contractual Whole-time teachers (CWTT) and 2 Part-time teachers (PTT). At present, the department has 4 SACT1 and 1 SACT2 teacher. In total, there are roughly 130-135 students distributed in the 3 semesters. All of them are honours students since the department doesn’t offer pass courses. Only the students, who fail, can continue with the pass course. But at present due to the CBCS system, there is no scope of fail, honours students can continue studying this honours course .
