Brief History of The Department of Commerce

Surendranath College affiliated to the University of Calcutta, in Kolkata, India. It was founded in the year 1884 by the national leader and scholar Sir Surendranath Banerjea. For much of its history it was known as Ripon College, named for the British Viceroy Lord Ripon, but in 1948-1949 it was renamed as Surendranath College. Swami Vivekananda delivered his first address in Calcutta from the rostrum of this college on his return from Chicago after his famous deliverance at the World Religious Parliament. The Journey of the Department of Commerce dates back to the year 1921.
