Activity Report
Name of the Event – Two Special Lectures by Guest Speakers for the Semester IV and VI Students of English Hons. (in collaboration with the IQAC, Surendranath College).
Name of the Speakers – Triparna Mukherjee, Assistant Professor in English, South Calcutta Girls’ College; and, Sujay Thakur, Assistant Professor in English, Gangadharpur Mahavidyamandir

Summary –
The event was anchored by Sudipta Saha, Head of the Department of English, Surendranath College. The lectures began with the inaugural address of Dr. Indranil Kar, Principal, Surendranath College; and, Dr. Achintya Biswas, Associate Professor and IQAC Coordinator, Surendranath College.
The first speaker of the lecture series was Triparna Mukherjee, who is an Assistant Professor at the Department of English, South Calcutta Girls’ College. The topic of her lecture was “Environmental Concerns, Folklore and Indian English Literature: An Ecocritical Approach.” Ms. Mukherjee focused her lecture on the deep ecology, environmental consciousness, the folklore of Bonobibi at the Sundarbans, and, the deep connection of nature and the overall environment with human beings and the presentation of the same in literature, particularly in Indian writings in English. After the lecture, during the question and answer session, students cleared their doubts by asking questions to the speaker, followed by the speaker answering each and every questions asked and also listened to the comments made by the audience.
The second speaker was Sujay Thakur, who is an Assistant Professor at the Department of English, Gangadharpur Mahavidyamandir. The topic of his lecture was “ How colonised are you? Neo-Colonialism and Cultures of Oppression.” This lecture was mainly interactive the students present. It was focused on how the colonial consciousness have stayed in the minds of the people, even after 75 years of Independence from the colonial rule. It also focused on how the neo-colonialism comes with a trait of manipulation. Towards the conclusion of the lecture, a Google Form was circulated among the students which was prepared by the speaker himself in order to understand their colonial psyche. The session ended with the asking of the questions to the speaker by the students.
The Vote of Thanks was delivered jointly by Madhulina Bauri, Associate Professor, Department of English; and, Dr. Rima Chakraborty, Assistant Professor, Department of English.
